SHOOT II
Politics and Persuasion
Fall 2024
"Society inadvertently places gender roles into advertising and visual media
which can be seen through the analysis of psychology behind the differences in
how men and women pose."
-Lily Rubenstein, Lead Photographer
Fetch's latest photo series dives into the subtle yet powerful ways gender roles are communicated through visual media. Featuring images that highlight the distinct poses and attire of men and women, this collection explores how society’s ingrained gender norms shape our subconscious expectations and perceptions. Drawing on insights from the documentaries Codes of Gender and Miss Representation, the photos shed light on how these poses reinforce traditional views of masculinity and femininity without viewers even noticing.
These visuals also tie into the political landscape, where clothing choices for women, especially in politics, become topics of scrutiny and affect public perception. The spread examines how the way women present themselves through fashion can influence their perceived authority and comfort in predominantly male spaces, sparking dialogue about power dynamics, self-representation, and the unspoken codes that still influence women’s roles today.
Sincerely,
Lily Rubenstein

Notes from Joy Mao & Reel Talk Agency on the Video Creation:
The concept behind this shoot was to portray the differences in perception and behaviour with two vastly different outfits. When shooting, we chose a variety of angles to exemplify what the character embodied based on what she was wearing. Our choice in black and white colouring helped place emphasis on silhouette, as well as contrast in character behaviour.
